An 18th-Century country manor house is the centrepiece of the recently refurbished DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa, Chester. An attractive hotel, it has been extended over time to accommodate 220 bedrooms and suites, two restaurants, a luxury spa and leisure club, facilities for business and events, and plenty of dedicated spaces for relaxing.
Set in 12 acres of prime Cheshire countryside, with beautifully groomed gardens and grounds, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa, Chester feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. In reality, it’s just over two miles from the historic city centre.
Style & service
Following a recent interior makeover, completed to the highest Hilton standards, guests can enjoy some serious pampering, relaxation and dining in 4-star surroundings. While the new styling at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa is very up-to-date, some of the interior design choices provide a subtle reminder that the hotel started life over 250-year’s ago. Interestingly, some of the design inspiration has been taken from one of the former owners of the glorious Grade II-listed manor house who was a keen hot air balloonist. Illustrations, murals and paintings around the hotel depict delightful scenes of ballooning, helping to create a real sense of calm and serenity in the place.
Hilton fans can rest assured that style has definitely not been delivered at the expense of substance. Standards throughout the hotel are exactly what you would expect from any establishment bearing the Hilton badge.
Pampering & relaxation
If you like a bit of TLC, there’s plenty for you to try out in the luxury hotel spa. The spa team couldn’t be more welcoming and are working hard to keep standards high. There’s an indoor pool, jacuzzis, thermal suite with aroma room, steam room, Hammam and sauna, Watso-therapy pool and an open-air thermal spa pool with waterfall.
Multiple treatment rooms, which use Pevonia and Elemis products, cater for every type of beauty treatment and pampering. For something a little more energetic, the hotel has a large and well-equipped gym. And, don’t miss the club house cafe with open air terrace, which overlooks the wonderful Cheshire countryside. Recently opened, and exclusively for spa guests, it’s a great place to chill out and watch the world go by.
If you’re not completely stress-free by the time you’ve finished in the hotel spa then try afternoon tea or a glass of fizz in the tranquil walled garden courtyard or on the Garden Room terrace. Both are also fabulous sun traps and the Garden Room is open all day until 10pm for food and drinks.
Food & drink
There are two fine restaurants at the hotel, the Marco Pierre White Steak House and the Garden Room. The Marco Pierre White restaurant is more traditionally styled, old-world glamour if you like, and a more formal atmosphere. It is staffed by a remarkable team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable waiters and waitresses who are a great asset to the hotel. This restaurant serves well cooked and well presented grill-style favourites, from steaks to seafood, but make sure you book ahead as it’s popular and was completely full when we visited.
The Garden Room is more modern in style, much lighter and brighter and less formal. It has great leather booth seating for groups and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, which open out onto a stylish terrace for warmer nights. The menu is much more laid back too, with steaks, pizzas, salads and so forth. A large well-stocked bar offers every drink imaginable.
Bed & breakfast
Rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa, Chester are stylish, very comfortable and incredibly clean. The standard rooms are relatively compact, largely due to the enormous and unbelievably comfortable king or super-king size beds, which have high quality mattresses and linen. Those who prefer more room can always book a suite to stretch out in. Our room overlooked the beautifully manicured gardens where guests were relaxing in the sunshine.
The bijou bathrooms are super stylish with delightful complimentary toiletries from Crabtree & Evelyn. Ours had a large walk in shower but no bath.
Breakfast is a leisurely affair, open until 11am, and well stacked with every conceivable kind of food. Our Full English was cooked to perfection and there were plenty of healthy options too, including fabulous fresh fruits, porridge, smoothies, yogurts and juices.
