Evuna, Knutsford WA16: A taste of Spain

Evuna, Knutsford has an authentic Spanish-style atmosphere and interior, combined with perfectly cooked contemporary-styled Spanish plates, including tapas, and an exciting wine list.

Authentic Spanish atmosphere

Stepping inside this new Cheshire hotspot feels a bit like stepping into an oak-aged cask of vintage Rioja. Look up, look down, look side-to-side and you will see plenty of darkened solid oak timbers. Add wall-to-wall diners buzzing with chit-chat over plates of food, Cervezas in hand, and you get the perfect authentic Spanish atmosphere. Evuna is definitely more downtown Madrid, less mid-Cheshire village.

Although the Knutsford restaurant offers dining over two floors, plus additional seating at the bar area (for a bit of authentic tapas-style dining) it is advisable to book ahead, because Evuna fills up quickly.

While service can be a little “Manyana” (what’s the rush, have a few drinks, we’re in Madrid after all, aren’t we!) once your order has been taken, the food comes out relatively quickly.

Evuna’s Menu

We ordered a combination of seafood, fish, meat and veggie dishes, and a salad, so we could see the all-round ability from the kitchen. Evuna’s Spanish chef and the team did well; all our small plates were cooked to perfection and utterly delicious. The food was light and flavoursome, with plenty of fresh Spanish flavours coming through.

The Gambas in Garlic and Chilli were plump and juicy, the Calamares a la Romana were crispy and light on the outside and soft on the inside, no oily residue or floury batter in sight, just a beautiful delicate flavour. While somewhat petite, the Josper Salmon with Pepper Puree was perfect, a great balance of flavours and freshness. The Filetitos Steak with Chilli was smooth and deep in flavour and the Pan Catalan (tomato bread) was addictive (no tinned tomatoes in sight) –  with delicious artisan-quality bread. Some people may find the portion sizes a little small, but that is the point of Tapas: if you want more, you order more. More choice, less waste.

It is refreshing to see that Evuna in Knutsford has tackled the wine list head on. Quality Spanish wines from regions such as Catalunya, Galicia, Rioja and Navarra are available in abundance by the glass, rather than the bog standard few usually on offer. That deserves a real pat on the back! Sipping a fantastic white Rioja, served crisp, cold and fresh, made the perfect match for a predominantly seafood and fish-heavy Tapas selection.

This Spanish Conquistador is a welcome addition to Cheshire’s somewhat unpredictable restaurant scene. If it can continue to deliver the quality standards with which it has so wonderfully started, it can expect to conquer Cheshire’s loyal following of foodies.
