Over the coming weeks Luxury Cheshire will be featuring the best getaways within two hours’ drive of Cheshire.
We start with the Swan Hotel & Spa in the scenic Lake District.
We first stumbled across The Swan when we visited for lunch in 2015. We were impressed by its quirky, stylish décor and gastropub dining.
The Swan is conveniently located at Newby Bridge, at the southernmost tip of Lake Windermere. From Luxury Cheshire’s Wilmslow HQ, that is a 2-hour drive, even taking into account some roadworks on the M6.
Just two hours until you are in front of one of the cosy log fires, or the pool, relaxing into a spa treatment or snuggling down into your comfortable bed overlooking the pretty River Leven.
The Swan is an informal, family-friendly hotel, with many thoughtful extras for children. It is an ideal getaway for half term or a short family break. We particularly love the milk and cookies at bedtime, which is offered as a complimentary treat delivered by room service.
The pink-themed playroom is also a draw, with a pink pool table for the children, and comfy leather sofas for the grown-ups.
Children are permitted to use the swimming pool until 7pm, although do note that it does get rather busy in school holidays.
The hotel’s nature trail is great for taking little legs on a short walk around, and the nearby steam railway is a must.
The Swan is also perfect for a romantic getaway. Choose a room in the main part of the hotel, or one of the new cottage style ‘nest’ apartments next door. All are colourfully decorated to a high standard in eye-catching, quirky fabrics and wallcoverings.
The restaurant at The Swan serves hearty dishes including British pub classics such as Game Pie. The seasonal menu also includes local produce, seafood and vegetarian options. Sticky Toffee Pudding (it was invented in the Lake District) should absolutely feature on your order at some point during your stay.
