Are you a lapsed sailor, thinking of taking the helm once more? A total beginner wanting to learn the ropes? Or maybe you just want to hang out with yachting types. If you live within reach of Siddington, Macclesfield, Redesmere sailing club will fit the bill, and do it in style.
Redesmere Sailing Club is set on the peaceful and picturesque Redesmere Lake on the Capesthorne Estate, near Siddington, Macclesfield. Members are drawn to the spot from nearby towns and villages including Alderley Edge and Wilmslow, as well as further afield. The Club’s superiority was officially recognised last year when it was crowned Club of the Year by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).
A factor in achieving the RYA accolade was the club’s recent and extensive renovation programme. This included dredging parts of the lake, extending the foreshore area and making improvements to the clubhouse.
The renovation works were given the royal seal of approval this week when the club was honoured with a visit from HRH Princess Anne. The Princess, who is a keen yachtswoman and President of the RYA took a tour of the lake before inspecting the club’s facilities and officially opening the new foreshore area.
Redesmere offers training to sailors of all ages and abilities, and some well known names in the world of sailing made their maiden voyages on the lake. Redesmere Sailing Club counts amongst its alumni 2020 Olympics hopeful, Elliot Hanson. Following in the footsteps of Ben Ainslie (another Redesmere Sailing club alumnus) Hanson is a member of the British Sailing team and is currently training with Land Rover BAR.
