A private jet is the ultimate travel upgrade – and for a family holiday with small children, it is particularly easy to see why. The benefits include a more flexible timetable, the ability to take pets with you (rather than stowed in the hold), bespoke catering, privacy from other passengers (no complaints from the child-free about sleepless or noisy toddlers), and the ability to take all the necessary baby paraphernalia on-board with you.
Having decided that private jet travel is for you, the only problem you are left with is deciding where to go.
Luxury Cheshire asked a private jet operator Falcona, based at Manchester Airport, for recommendations for easy-to-reach family holiday destinations with great private jet facilities.
1) Olbia – Sardinia
Olbia on North East coast of the island of Sardinia, is a dynamic city and sought-after tourist destination, thanks to its inviting waters and beautiful beaches. The glamorous Porto Cervo is a mere 40 minutes’ drive away, its Yacht Club a regular mooring point for some of the biggest and most luxurious superyachts in the world.
Private jet facilities: Olbia airport is just 6km southeast of the city centre, and has a dedicated VIP Private Jet terminal. It is open 24 hours a day, meaning you can swan in at a time that suits you.
When to go: Olbia has a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot summers, very mild winters, warm springs and autumns.
Extremely popular with private jet charter passengers, Cannes is known for its international film festival, as well as its beautiful Mediterranean beaches, world-class hotels and glamorous casinos. The Boulevard de la Croisette, which curves along the coast, is lined with sandy beaches, upmarket boutiques and palatial hotels.
When to go: Cannes enjoys long, warm summers. Temperatures remain high from June to September, which is the most popular time to visit.
Private jet facilities: Smaller jets can fly into Cannes & Nice Côte d’Azur Airport which is just 25 minutes by car from the town. Larger aircraft will land at Cannes-Mandelieu Airport which, with a dedicated private jet terminal, is one of the major airport gateways for private jet passengers flying into and from the French Riviera area.
Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, known for its great night-life and resorts jutting up from yellow-sand beaches. Looming over that modern skyline are the city’s two imposing hilltop citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, remnants of Moorish rule.
When to go: Málaga enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, and very little rain. Summer visitors benefit from gentle, cooling winds blowing from the Mediterranean Sea which make the heat more manageable.
Private jet facilities: Private Jets have exclusive use of the General Aviation Terminal, set apart from the main airport thus affording privacy and a swift process through on arrival.
For a peaceful family holiday, avoiding the clubs, head for Santa Eulalia. It is a beautiful town and resort on the East coast of the island, is popular with families and those looking for a quieter holiday.
When to go: May – October.
Private jet facilities: Ibiza Airport is just four miles / ten minutes from town, is open 24/7 and has two dedicated private jet terminals, which can if required accommodate large jets.
Mykonos is a small island in the Cyclades – a group of Greek islands, southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea.
With its great restaurants, amazing beaches and fabulous parties, there is a lot to love about Mykonos. The Greek island was recently described by Tatler magazine as ‘the chicest of all the Greek Islands‘.
Ornos Beach, on the South West of the island, boasts powder-soft golden sand and crystal clear waters. Ornos is also a favoured mooring spot for billionaire super-yachts. Mykonos is famed for its nightlife, notably the beach bars, where parties begin in the afternoon and continue into the early hours.
When to go: The climate here is typically mediterranean, with mild winters and warm, sunny summers. In fact, the sun shines on Mykonos for up to 300 days a year. The temperature can be lower than other Greek islands, as it benefits from a cooling breeze.
Private Jet Facilities: Mykonos Airport is located 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) south-east of the town of Mykonos and private jet passengers use the airport’s commercial terminal. As a private jet passenger, you are greeted for arrival or departure at the Information Desk by a member of staff who will escort you to the aircraft, expediting passport and customs clearance. Further assistance such as concierge or limousine services may be arranged, if required.
It is advisable to book as far ahead as possible (ie, now!) as the airport, which is also known as Hephaistos (or Ifestos) Airport, is very busy during the summer months and private jet slots can be limited.
